Quick answer: No. AITSL, which runs the skills assessment for teachers migrating to Australia, accepts only an Academic IELTS Test Report Form: Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 8.0 and Listening 8.0 on a single TRF, from a test taken in the 3 years before you apply. It does not accept PTE. PTE Academic is still accepted by the Department of Home Affairs at the visa stage, where it can earn 10 or 20 points. Below: which test to book at each stage, and a worked points example for a teacher.

Teachers planning to migrate to Australia meet English requirements at three separate stages: the AITSL skills assessment, state or territory teacher registration, and the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) visa stage. The accepted tests are not the same at each one. The most expensive mistake is sitting PTE Academic for the AITSL stage, where it is not accepted at all. This guide gives the direct answer, a stage-by-stage table, a decision path for which test to book first, and the score requirements where PTE Academic does count.

Does AITSL Accept PTE? The Direct Answer

No. AITSL accepts only Academic IELTS for the teacher skills assessment, or a study option instead of a test. Its English language proficiency page says: "AITSL will only accept an Academic IELTS Test Report Form. We do NOT accept PTE, PEAT, ISLPR, TOEFL, Cambridge or any other form of English language test."

For the IELTS route, AITSL requires, on a single Test Report Form from a test taken during the 3-year period before you submit the application:

  • Reading: 7.0 minimum
  • Writing: 7.0 minimum
  • Speaking: 8.0 minimum
  • Listening: 8.0 minimum

IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted. IELTS Online and IELTS Indicator are not: AITSL accepts paper-based and computer-delivered Academic tests taken at IELTS test centres. The alternative to IELTS is the study option: 4 full years of higher-education study, including a recognised initial teacher education qualification with supervised teaching practice, completed in Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA. A PhD counts for at most 2 of the 4 years.

The Three Stages: Where Each Test Counts

StageBodyIs PTE Academic accepted?Requirement
Skills assessment (migration) AITSL No. Academic IELTS only IELTS R7.0 / W7.0 / S8.0 / L8.0 on a single TRF, test within the 3 years before applying, or the 4-year study option
Teacher registration State and territory regulators (NESA, VIT, QCT, TRBSA, TRBWA and others) Set by each regulator Check the accepted tests and scores with the regulator where you will teach before booking anything
Visa (skilled migration) Department of Home Affairs Yes Proficient L58 / R59 / W69 / S76 = 10 points; Superior L69 / R70 / W85 / S88 = 20 points (PTE tests on or after 7 August 2025)

Sources: AITSL English language proficiency (PTE not accepted, re-checked 3 October 2026) and the AITSL Secondary Teacher checklist (July 2026 edition: band scores, single TRF and the 3-year window, verified 3 October 2026); DHA Proficient and Superior English pages (verified 3 October 2026).

A PTE result can never be submitted to AITSL. The reverse can work: an Academic IELTS result can also be used at the visa stage, as the next section shows.

Which Test Should a Teacher Book First? A Decision Path

Book Academic IELTS first, because AITSL accepts nothing else, then decide whether you need PTE at all based on the visa points your IELTS result already gives you.

  1. Do you meet AITSL's study option (4 years of qualifying higher education in one of the six listed countries)? If yes, you may not need IELTS for AITSL. Confirm with AITSL.
  2. If not, sit Academic IELTS and aim for R7.0 / W7.0 / S8.0 / L8.0 on one TRF.
  3. Check what that IELTS result is worth at DHA. For tests on or after 7 August 2025, DHA counts IELTS Academic 7 in every skill as Proficient English (10 points) and 8 in every skill as Superior English (20 points). An AITSL-level result (R7, W7, S8, L8) is therefore Proficient at DHA, not Superior, because Reading and Writing are below 8.
  4. Need Superior? You have two routes: lift IELTS Reading and Writing to 8 as well, or sit PTE Academic and reach L69 / R70 / W85 / S88.
  5. Check your state regulator separately. Registration rules are not set by AITSL or DHA.

Worked Example: A Secondary Teacher's Points

The example below uses the DHA points table and the 4 June 2026 subclass 189 round. It is an illustration built from official figures, not a real applicant.

A 35-year-old secondary teacher with a bachelor degree, 5 to 8 years of overseas teaching experience and no partner claim: age 25 + education 15 + overseas employment 10 + single 10 = 60 points before English.

  • With the AITSL-level IELTS (Proficient at DHA): 60 + 10 = 70.
  • With Superior English (IELTS 8 in every skill, or PTE Academic L69 / R70 / W85 / S88): 60 + 20 = 80.

In the 4 June 2026 round, the minimum points for Secondary School Teacher was 75. On those numbers, this teacher would sit below the cut-off with Proficient English and above it with Superior. Cut-offs change every round, and ties are broken by the date your EOI reached its score, so treat this as a direction, not a forecast.

Where PTE Academic Fits for Teachers

PTE Academic's job for a teacher is the visa points, nothing earlier. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, DHA's PTE thresholds are:

  • Proficient English: Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, Speaking 76, worth 10 points.
  • Superior English: Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, Speaking 88, worth 20 points.

Every skill must meet its own minimum; an overall score is not used. Teachers who already hold the AITSL IELTS result usually sit PTE only if they want Superior and find the PTE format easier than lifting IELTS Reading and Writing to 8. PTE score for Australia PR points walks through full points totals, and how to score Superior English covers preparation.

How teaching compares with AHPRA nursing

AHPRA does accept PTE Academic: for tests taken on or after 23 April 2026 the standard is Overall 63 with Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 60 and Speaking 76, at a test centre only. AITSL accepts no PTE result at all. A nurse can run a PTE-only plan; a teacher cannot.

Common Mistakes Teachers Make

  • Sitting PTE Academic for the AITSL skills assessment. AITSL accepts Academic IELTS only. A PTE booking at this stage is a wasted test fee and a delayed application.
  • Combining two IELTS reports for AITSL. All four bands must appear on a single TRF. AITSL can accept IELTS One Skill Retake tests.
  • Assuming the AITSL IELTS gives Superior points. R7.0 and W7.0 are Proficient at DHA. Superior needs 8 in every IELTS skill.
  • Targeting an overall PTE score. DHA thresholds are per skill. A high overall with Writing below 69 is not Proficient.
  • Booking PTE Core. PTE Core is a Canada product. See PTE Core vs Academic.
  • Assuming AITSL covers registration. State and territory regulators set their own English rules.

Tips for Nepali and South Asian Teachers

  • Plan for Speaking and Listening at 8.0. These are AITSL's two highest bands, and Speaking 76 is also the highest PTE floor for Proficient at DHA.
  • Watch the 3-year clock. AITSL's July 2026 checklists accept a test taken in the 3 years before you apply; older checklists said 24 months, so ignore any guide still quoting that. If your application slips past the 3 years, you retake.
  • Get a stage map before you book anything. The team of Smriti Simkhada offers 1-on-1 coaching in plans of 7 days, 17 days or 1 month, for both Proficient and Superior goals, with slots across Australian, Nepal and Gulf time zones. A free score assessment is the first step.

"Targeting Superior English from the start was the right call — the 20 points made my 189 application competitive without a second PTE attempt." — Anu B., Pokhara

Results reflect individual student preparation experience. Scores depend on personal effort, starting ability, and test conditions. No specific outcome is guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AITSL accept PTE for the teacher skills assessment?

No. AITSL accepts only an Academic IELTS Test Report Form and states that it does not accept PTE, PEAT, ISLPR, TOEFL, Cambridge or any other English test. The alternative is its study option of 4 full years of qualifying higher education in one of six listed countries.

What IELTS scores does AITSL require?

Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 8.0 and Listening 8.0, all on a single Academic IELTS Test Report Form, from a test taken in the 3 years before you apply. IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted; IELTS Online and Indicator are not.

Can I use PTE Core for teaching in Australia?

No. PTE Core is used for Canadian immigration. For Australia, PTE Academic applies at the DHA visa stage, and AITSL accepts Academic IELTS only.

Does my AITSL IELTS result count for visa points?

It can. For tests on or after 7 August 2025, DHA treats IELTS Academic 7 in every skill as Proficient English (10 points) and 8 in every skill as Superior English (20 points). An AITSL-level result of R7, W7, S8, L8 is Proficient, provided it is still inside DHA's time window for your visa.

Do I need separate tests for AITSL and Australia PR?

Not always. One Academic IELTS result can serve AITSL and give Proficient points at DHA. Teachers who want Superior either lift IELTS to 8 in every skill or sit PTE Academic for L69 / R70 / W85 / S88. A PTE result can never be submitted to AITSL.

Conclusion: Plan Your Teacher-Migration English Strategy

For teachers, the order is fixed: Academic IELTS (or the study option) for AITSL, the state regulator's own rule for registration, then IELTS or PTE Academic for visa points. Work out your points total before deciding whether Superior is worth chasing. See the teachers section on the pathway hub, the subclass 189 guide and 1-on-1 coaching in Sydney.

Verify before you act. This page is general information, not migration advice. Check the AITSL migration pages, your state regulator and the DHA English language page, and speak to a MARA-registered migration agent before you apply.
