PTE Core and CELPIP General are both on IRCC's list of approved English tests for Express Entry, and both report your result in a form IRCC converts to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. So the question for a Nepali student is not "which one does Canada accept?" It is "which one gets me to my CLB target sooner, from where I live, with the fewest retakes?"

This page answers that from the Nepal side: where you can sit each test, what each one rewards, what CLB 9 demands on each, and what a retake costs you in time.

Quick Verdict

For most students sitting the test in Nepal, PTE Core is the practical default. The reason is mostly logistics, not difficulty. PTE Core runs through Pearson's test centre network. At the time of writing, celpip.ca lists one centre in Nepal (Alfa Beta Institute, New Baneshwor, Kathmandu). Check the live locator before booking. If you live in Pokhara, Chitwan or Butwal and a centre near you shows Core dates, or you may need a second attempt before an Express Entry draw, that difference matters more than the question types.

CELPIP is the better pick if three things are true: you can get to Kathmandu easily, you speak naturally and at length but struggle with short, timed, rapid-fire tasks, and you are not in a hurry. CELPIP's Speaking is marked by several human raters, its Writing scores are all reviewed by human raters, and its tasks are everyday situations rather than strict-format items.

Neither test gives you more CRS points: CLB 9 is CLB 9.

Is PTE Core Easier Than CELPIP?

Neither is easier for everyone, and anyone who says otherwise is selling one of them. The two reward different habits. Here is what each asks of you, skill by skill.

Speaking

PTE Core Speaking is a run of short, timed items. They reward clear, steady delivery and a fixed structure you can deliver without pausing.

CELPIP Speaking asks for longer answers to everyday situations: advise a friend, describe a picture, deal with a difficult situation. It rewards someone who can talk naturally and organise ideas on the spot, and students whose pronunciation drops when they rush may find it kinder.

Writing

PTE Core has no essay. You get Summarize Written Text, a 25-50-word summary of a passage, and Write Email.

CELPIP gives you an email and a response to a survey question, where you pick a side and support it. More room to develop ideas, and human raters review every score.

Reading and Listening

In PTE Core, some tasks are scored for more than one skill. Write from Dictation and Summarize Spoken Text are Listening tasks, but your spelling and writing count too. CELPIP keeps Reading and Listening separate and uses Canadian voices and Canadian everyday settings throughout.

So which one will feel easier for you?

  • PTE Core will probably feel easier if you type well, spell accurately, have already prepared for PTE Academic, and do better with short, predictable tasks.
  • CELPIP will probably feel easier if you speak fluently but lose marks when rushed, prefer writing a full answer to compressing a passage into 25-50 words, and have watched plenty of North American content.

The quickest way to know: sit one official practice test of each.

Where PTE Core Wins for Nepali Students

1. You can sit it outside one Kathmandu centre

Pearson runs PTE through a network of test centres, and Pearson's own comparison says PTE Core is offered in many more countries than CELPIP. Pearson's centre list for Nepal currently shows centres in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Chitwan, Tilottama (Butwal area) and Itahari; the booking screen shows which have PTE Core dates open. At the time of writing, celpip.ca lists one centre in Nepal (Alfa Beta Institute, New Baneshwor, Kathmandu). Check the live locator before booking. From Pokhara or the Terai, a Kathmandu-only test means a bus ride and a night away for every attempt. Check Pearson's test centre finder for current dates.

2. More dates when you need a retake

Many students sit twice. With more centres, PTE Core usually gives you more dates to choose from. With one CELPIP centre, a retake means waiting for the next sitting it offers.

3. Structured preparation pays off

Because PTE Core is machine-scored against fixed criteria, practice on format and delivery shows up in the score. The Describe Image formula and a clean Write Email layout are good examples. Pearson says its scoring engines are trained on 126 accents. PTE Core is scored by computer; Pearson's 2025 move to part-human marking applies to PTE Academic (including its UKVI version) only.

Where CELPIP Wins

1. Human raters on Speaking, human review on Writing

CELPIP says each Speaking performance is rated by three to five human raters working independently. Writing is scored by an AI-human hybrid, and every writing score is reviewed by the human rating team. If your spoken English is clear but you keep losing marks on machine-scored Read Aloud or Repeat Sentence, a test with human-rated Speaking is a fair thing to try. Human raters also mark down unclear speech. Switching tests does not fix pronunciation.

2. Everyday Canadian tasks

CELPIP's scenarios are things you would do in Canada: write to a landlord, give a neighbour advice, answer a community survey.

What CLB 9 Takes on Each Test

CRS points depend on your CLB level, not the test. For a single applicant, CLB 9 in a skill earns 31 points under first official language, so CLB 9 in all four skills gives 124 points. CLB 10 in a skill earns 34.

What changes is how hard each test makes it to reach that CLB. On CELPIP you need a 9 in each skill. On PTE Core you need these minimums:

CLB level CELPIP General (each skill) PTE Core min - Listening Reading Speaking Writing
CLB 10 10 89 88 89 90
CLB 9 9 82 78 84 88
CLB 8 8 71 69 76 79
CLB 7 7 60 60 68 69

Look at the Writing column. PTE Core CLB 9 Writing is 88, which leaves you two points of room below the maximum. A 79 in Writing is only CLB 8. Reading is the most forgiving skill on PTE Core: 78 gets you CLB 9. If your practice scores show Writing stuck in the low 80s, that is a sign to either drill Write Email and Summarize Written Text hard, or try a CELPIP practice test and see whether CELPIP's email task suits you better.

Cost From Nepal

Pearson sets one fee for PTE Core and PTE Academic in Nepal. It is shown in USD in your myPTE account at booking, and your bank converts it to rupees at its own rate, so check the amount before you pay.

CELPIP sets its own fee for Nepal. Check the current price on celpip.ca when booking.

The fee is rarely the deciding number. Add the real costs: travel to Kathmandu if you live elsewhere, a night's stay, and the cost of a second attempt if the first falls short. One extra trip can wipe out any difference in the test fees.

Common Mistakes When Choosing

  • Booking PTE Academic instead of PTE Core. IRCC accepts PTE Core for Express Entry. PTE Academic is not accepted for Canadian PR - IRCC takes PTE Core. Read PTE Core vs PTE Academic if you are unsure.
  • Ignoring the Writing bar. Students often reach CLB 9 in three PTE Core skills and stall on Writing at 88.

Step-by-Step: How to Decide in One Week

  1. Set your target. Decide the CLB you need in each skill for your Express Entry profile or provincial stream.
  2. Check dates. Look up open PTE Core dates at centres near you and the next CELPIP sittings in Kathmandu.
  3. Take one official practice test of each. Do them on different days, under real timing.
  4. Convert both to CLB. Use the table above. Compare skill by skill, not just the overall picture.
  5. Choose the test where your weakest skill is closest to target. Your weakest skill is the one that caps you: program minimums and the CLB 9-in-all-four bonus both key off it.
  6. Book with room for a retake before any draw or deadline you care about. IRCC needs your results to be less than 2 years old both when you submit your Express Entry profile and when you apply for PR, so plan your booking around that window.

Tips for Nepali Students

  • Watch your Repeat Sentence pace. Many Nepali speakers drop word endings when speaking fast (the "-ed" and "-s" sounds). PTE Core's machine scoring hears every one. Slow down slightly and finish each word.
  • Already prepared for PTE Academic? Many task types carry over, so PTE Core is usually the quicker switch. Check the PTE Core task rules, though: Summarize Spoken Text wants 20-30 words, not the 50-70 used in PTE Academic.

What About IELTS General Training?

IELTS General Training is the third English option IRCC accepts for Express Entry. If you are weighing all three, see PTE Core vs IELTS for Canada from Nepal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PTE Core easier than CELPIP?

Neither is easier for everyone. PTE Core suits students who type and spell well and do better on short, timed, structured tasks; it has no essay, but CLB 9 Writing needs 88. CELPIP suits fluent speakers who prefer longer, everyday answers, with human-rated Speaking. Sit one official practice test of each and compare your weakest skill on the CLB scale.

Do PTE Core and CELPIP give the same CRS points?

Yes. IRCC awards CRS points by CLB level, so CLB 9 from PTE Core and CLB 9 from CELPIP are worth exactly the same. For a single applicant that is 31 points per skill at CLB 9 under first official language.

What scores do I need for CLB 9?

On CELPIP you need a 9 in each skill. On PTE Core you need at least Listening 82, Reading 78, Speaking 84 and Writing 88. Writing is the hardest of the four to reach on PTE Core.

Can I take CELPIP in Nepal?

Yes. At the time of writing, celpip.ca lists one centre in Nepal (Alfa Beta Institute, New Baneshwor, Kathmandu). Check the live locator before booking. PTE Core is offered through Pearson's test centre network. If you live outside the Kathmandu valley or may need a retake soon, compare open dates for both before you book.

Which is cheaper from Nepal?

Pearson sets one fee for PTE Core and PTE Academic in Nepal. It is shown in USD in your myPTE account at booking, and your bank converts it to rupees at its own rate, so check the amount before you pay. CELPIP sets its own fee, shown on celpip.ca. The bigger cost is usually logistics: travel to Kathmandu for CELPIP if you live elsewhere, and how soon you can sit again if you need a retake. Confirm both live fees on the official booking pages before paying.

Conclusion

PTE Core vs CELPIP comes down to your weakest skill and your logistics, not to which test is "easier". From Nepal, PTE Core is usually the more practical choice because of centre access and retake dates; CELPIP is worth it if its human-rated Speaking and conversational tasks suit you and Kathmandu is close. Verify before booking: Pearson lists the PTE fee in Nepal in USD, so the rupee amount depends on your bank's rate. Always confirm the current fee on the official Pearson PTE Core booking page in your Pearson account before payment.

Not for Australia: PTE Core is approved by IRCC for Canada only. Australia's Department of Home Affairs and AHPRA accept PTE Academic - not PTE Core - for skilled-migration visas (189 / 190 / 491 / 482 / 186) and professional registration. Verify on immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.

Always verify: IRCC scoring tables, CLB-to-PTE Core conversions and program-specific minimums can change. Confirm the latest values on the IRCC Express Entry language test page before submitting any application.
